The Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis) in Doñana increases in scrub areas and becomes more nocturnal after the population decline of the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)

Competition, predation, and diseases are key factors shaping animal communities. In recent decades, lagomorphs in Europe have been impacted by virus-borne diseases that have caused substantial declines in their populations and, subsequently, in many of their predators. We examined activity and habitat-use patterns of sympatric European rabbits and Iberian hares in Doñana National Park, (DNP) during two periods of disease outbreak.

The Natural Processes Monitoring Team of the ICTS-RBD participates in the III Atlas of birds during the breeding season in Spain

On the 31st of March, SEO-BirdLife presented the new Atlas of birds in the breeding season in Spain https://atlasaves.seo.org/, in which the Natural Processes Monitoring Team (ESPN) of the ICTS-RBD has performed the counts in the Doñana Natural Space. The field-work was carried out between 2014 and 2018 and included around 1,500 transects, with more than 900 km recorded in 31 UTM grids of 10x10 km, which cover the entire Doñana Natural Area and surrounding areas.

Artificial refuges as a pilot measure in the long-term monitoring squamates reptiles in Doñana

In the Natural Area of Doñana coexist 24 reptile species (20 Squametes and 4 Testudines) of which four species are Iberian endemism and one invasive species. The monitoring of the reptile community in Doñana was initiated in 2003 with the aim to collect information about distribution and abundance of reptile, both in space and time. The sampling method used consists in recording all the individuals observed in seven transects in different types of habitats (dunes and mediterranean...

Biodiversity monitoring in the “LifePlan” Doñana plot

The ICTS-RBD collaborates with the University of Helsinki since April 2021 with the European Project LIFEPLAN – A Planetary Inventory of Life funded by the European Commission through the ERC Synergy Grant. The project's main objective is to improve the existing knowledge about the species richness on a global scale and determine trends facing global change and how they are structured in communities.

Members of the ICTS-RBD participate in an off-road vehicle driving course conducted by the Civil Guard

On the 31th of January and 1st and 2nd of February, 2022, part of the CSIC staff from the ICTS-RBD, has attended the out-road driving sessions carried out by the the Traffic School of Civil Guard in Mérida (Badajoz). The activity has had the participation of different instructors from the Traffic School, who have explained to the CSIC staff several aspects about the ergonomics of the vehicle, the necessary equipment and its use in field-work.
