A good winter for amphibians in Doñana

Last February 19th, after four weeks of fieldwork across the different Doñana wetlands (in 24 localities), ICTS-RBD’s Long-Term Monitoring Team completed the winter amphibian surveying. It has been a great winter for amphibians and it has coincided with the breeding period of most amphibian species. We have detected more than 7,000 individuals of 11 species found in Doñana, of which five are Iberian endemics.

International Waterbird Census during winter (January) in Doñana Natural Space

Last January, the Natural Processes Monitoring Team (ICTS-RBD) of the Doñana Biological Station carried out the International Waterbird Census during winter in the Guadalquivir Marshes (Doñana Natural Space, adjacent unprotected areas and Brazo del Este Natural Site). This census, coordinated by Wetlands International, is operating in 143 countries taking place in January or February to collect information on the numbers of waterbirds at wetlands sites.

Long-Term Determinants of Tuberculosis in the Ungulate Host Community of Doñana National Park

Animal tuberculosis (TB) is endemic in wild boar (Sus scrofa), red deer (Cervus elaphus), fallow deer (Dama dama) and cattle in south and central Spain. We studied TB at the wildlife-livestock interface in Doñana National Park for 14 years (2006-2018) in relation to host density, stochastic factors (rainfall) and environmental features (e.g., aggregation points such as waterholes).Wild boar showed the highest prevalence of TB (76.7%), followed by red deer (42.5%), fallow deer (14.4%) and...

Monitoring campaign of pond turtles distribution at Doñana National Park

The monitoring campaign of pond turtle’s distribution has been performed along last June in 23 localities of Doñana Nature Area. This monitoring is performed every 4 years in the same localities and the main objective is to register the two species of pond turtles of Doñana, the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) and the Mediterranean pond turtle (Mauremys leprosa), as well as variations in their distribution. This protocol was initiated in 2007 and it is carried out by placing 5 fyke...

Beginning of the 2020 Manecorro ringing campaign

Despite the uncertainty and inconveniences caused by the coronavirus pandemic, on September 1, scientific bird ringing activities began at the Manecorro constant effort station, located in the Doñana National Park, and which It will end on November 15.
Unfortunately, this year we have not been able to count on the presence of external ringers and personnel in training from many places in Spain and even Europe who usually collaborated in an invaluable way in carrying out the campaign.
