Long-Term Determinants of Tuberculosis in the Ungulate Host Community of Doñana National Park

Animal tuberculosis (TB) is endemic in wild boar (Sus scrofa), red deer (Cervus elaphus), fallow deer (Dama dama) and cattle in south and central Spain. We studied TB at the wildlife-livestock interface in Doñana National Park for 14 years (2006-2018) in relation to host density, stochastic factors (rainfall) and environmental features (e.g., aggregation points such as waterholes).Wild boar showed the highest prevalence of TB (76.7%), followed by red deer (42.5%), fallow deer (14.4%) and...

Monitoring campaign of pond turtles distribution at Doñana National Park

The monitoring campaign of pond turtle’s distribution has been performed along last June in 23 localities of Doñana Nature Area. This monitoring is performed every 4 years in the same localities and the main objective is to register the two species of pond turtles of Doñana, the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) and the Mediterranean pond turtle (Mauremys leprosa), as well as variations in their distribution. This protocol was initiated in 2007 and it is carried out by placing 5 fyke...

Beginning of the 2020 Manecorro ringing campaign

Despite the uncertainty and inconveniences caused by the coronavirus pandemic, on September 1, scientific bird ringing activities began at the Manecorro constant effort station, located in the Doñana National Park, and which It will end on November 15.
Unfortunately, this year we have not been able to count on the presence of external ringers and personnel in training from many places in Spain and even Europe who usually collaborated in an invaluable way in carrying out the campaign.

Puntal tortoise monitoring campaing finished

This year, the sixth and last sampling day of the tortoise Testudo graeca graeca was on March 13th, in the area of “Puntal”, in Doñana National Park.
This protocol consists in three annual consecutive campaigns, repeated every decade, in which an area of 45 Ha at the Vera of the National Park is intensively sampled.
The objective is to detect population trends in a species in which these trends can be difficult to verify given the high longevity of the adults and the low survival...

Current situation of the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) in the Doñana Natural Space.

"On last July 1-2, members of the Long-term Biodiversity Monitoring Team (ICTS-TBD) surveyed the fish and aquatic macroinvertebrates of Brenes and el Rompido Grande. This survey is part of the long-term monitoring of the aquatic ecosystems of Doñana Natural Space END). In these localities, we pay special attention to the populations of "jaiba azul" (Atlantic Blue Crab, Callinectes sapidus), an invasive crab originating from America that colonized the area recently (see post...
